Each year more than 8,000 South Australians are diagnosed with cancer, and across Australia, more than 100,000 people are diagnosed and approximately 40,000 die from cancer. 1 in every 2 Australians will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime (Cancer in Australia: an overview, 2008
).
Many encounter difficulties and frustrations with the system, but may be too tired to speak up, or focused on simply trying to survive.
Cancer Voices SA differs from other cancer support groups by "Raising a Voice for those affected by cancer". Advocacy involves 'being part of the solution' through input about problems and offering suggestions on what could be done.
Current priority topics identified by cancer consumers include access to treatments and quality cancer information, complementary therapies, and support for carers.
Cancer Voice SA representatives are active in a number of advisory positions at the state and national level. The table below lists our cancer consumer representatives, with links to information about the work of these committees.
