The competition itself was made up of 14 teams pooled in 3 groups with the top 8 teams later participating in a finals series.
Team huddle before one of the 6 games the boys played
Game 1: Cancer Voices SA vs Mosbury Vista Soccer Club.
The day started off with Cancer Voices pitted up in its first match against Modbury Vista Soccer Club. This was the first of four group games, meaning a good start would be beneficial in terms of qualifying for the quarter finals. This was achieved despite the team not ever having played together previously plus a long drive and a very early kick off. A 3-3 draw was the result with Cancer Voices finishing stronger as the game progressed. The team’s cohesion became evident as the game went on and we were unlucky not to snatch a win as a controversial goal scored on the siren was disallowed. Result: Draw 3-3
Game 2: Cancer Voices SA vs Oz Spurs.
Seizing on the confidence from the opening group game, we faced Oz Spurs in our next match. Once again after a slow start, Cancer Voices kicked on and won the game 4-3 finishing the game with great control and strength. This placed the team in an excellent position as equal leaders of the group with two other teams which we would be facing in the last two games of the group stage.
Result: Win 4-3
Cancer Voices on the attack again!
Game 3: Cancer Voices SA vs Para Hills
The third game saw Cancer Voices take on Para Hills and their group of unwelcoming supporters. Early signs indicated a close game with numerous spiteful tackles and a fair share of insults thrown at us by their unruly supporters. This seemed to galvanise the Cancer Voices boys as we slammed on 6 unanswered goals to silence the crowd and the opposition. This was by far our best game of the day with everything clicking, both defensively with our goal keeper, Yohan not allowing shots past him and also in attack with ruthless finishing to put us in a commanding position on the group table going into the last group game. Result: Win 6-0
Our boys showed great skill and determination
Game 4: Cancer Voices vs
Game 4 saw a quick turn around with only 15 mins of rest time and to re-hydrate. This was to be Liam’s last game and special mention must be given where it is deserved as Liam gave his all, putting in some tremendous tackles and lifting our defence to see out a hard fought 5-3 win to take us to the quarter final stage. Result: Win 5-3
Our two Exec Team members, Vince and Liam - Good on you, boys!
Quarter Final: Cancer Voices SA vs Para Hills II
By the time the quarter finals arrived only 15 minutes later, we had played 4 games and the legs felt like concrete and because we were down a player, we needed to summons all the energy reserves we had and that’s what we did. The quarter finals paired us against Para Hills II. Once again a hostile crowd and opposition greeted us but that did not inhibit our game, as always playing fairly and in good faith. Cancer Voices dominated the game from start to finish taking it out 7-1 with all our players giving their all and playing out of their skins despite a number of us cramping from muscle overexhaustion. Result: Win 7-1
Semi Final: Cancer Voices SA vs Noarlunga United
The next game was the semi final against the Noarlunga United, a team which had just come off a successful soccer season and played together week in week out. Hence, we were up against it with the Cancer Voices team putting on a gallant performance whilst going down 4 nil to a team that would go on to eventually win the Cancer Cup 7-2 in the final. Congratulations to Noarlunga United on winning the final. Result: Defeated 4-0
Still cheering even after losing the semi final – great effort, lads!
Back row : Sebastian, Marco, Ivan, Anton and Alet
Front row : Yohan, Vince and George, Missing : Liam
A super day was enjoyed by all. Warm congratulations must go to the boys who represented the Cancer Voices soccer team - Johan as Goal Keeper, Ivan, Liam and Marco as Defenders, Anton, George and Vince (Captain) as Midfielders, Sebastian and Alet as Strikers.
A huge thank you should also be extended to Ray, Veronica, Jacqueline – our Support Crew. The effort and commitment shown on the day was in one word 'inspirational' as we were the only team in the finals that was not club based. We pulled together and played with terrific spirit and character. It was also an excellent opportunity to promote the good work that Cancer Voices SA does and this assisted us in signing a number of new members.
