Calvary Central Districts Cancer Service at Elizabeth Vale

Adelaide Radiotherapy Centre opened its doors to patients at its new Calvary Central Districts Hospital site in Elizabeth Vale on July 1st 2013.

It represents the South Australian arm of the nation-wide Genesis Care Group, the largest provider of radiotherapy services in Australia.

Both Adelaide Radiotherapy Centre and the Calvary Healthcare Adelaide have long shared a strong commitment to improve access to   comprehensive and coordinated cancer care services to cancer patients resident in Adelaide’s north making Calvary’s alliance with Adelaide Radiotherapy Centre one of the key elements in the planning of this significant service redevelopment and improvement.

This project also features an upgraded 12 chair chemotherapy day facility capable of treating up to 20 patients per day at Calvary Central Districts thus creating a comprehensive coordinated Cancer Care precinct for patients and their families, many of whom require ready access to radiotherapy, chemotherapy and surgery. Calvary’s expansion also includes additional, specialist consulting rooms, plus breast and colorectal specialist clinics.

Adelaide Radiotherapy Centre site manager Emma Marafioti says patients in the northern suburbs requiring radiotherapy have previously faced round trips of up to 80 kilometres and 60 – 100 minutes travelling time daily. For patients who require lifesaving radiotherapy treatment five days per week for 6-8 weeks, the travel time alone can be a major burden. Side effects associated with treatment and the disease itself can present barriers to patients being able to make the daily journey and may eventually compromise the efficacy of the treatment. Reducing daily travel times will make a significant difference to patients’ ability to cope during and after their treatments .

The Adelaide Radiotherapy Centre service at Calvary Central Districts Hospital can accommodate up to 50 patients per day with capacity to add an additional linear accelerator and increase this to 100 patients per day. Adelaide Radiotherapy Centre is open to all patients with a referral and although it is a private specialist medical practice, it has capacity to take overflow for public patients.
